Participation during lessons

Students shall participate during lessons - this includes class participation in discussions and the completion of written assignments. Students shall be prepared for their lessons when the teacher comes to the classroom - they should be seated with the appropriate class materials - books, etc., ready. Students shall also attend, participate in and shower after PE lessons. If a student is to be excused from this, s/he must be in possession of a note from his/her parent explaning the need for the excuse.

Behaviour

Students shall behave in a respectful manner towards each other and the teachers, administration and staff.

There is zero tolerance policy at The Cosmo with regards to bullying, foul language, unacceptable behvaviour during breaks, lessons or on the playground.

Omissions

It is not acceptable that the students forget to do their homework, or forget their books for lessons. If they fail to do so, the parents will be contacted by the end of the week.

Toys

We acknowledge that it can be a help for the Primary students to bring toys to school but it is not allowed to play during lessons. Toy guns in particular are not recommended at the school.

Drugs and alcohol

Any form of drugs and alcohol is prohibited at the school. The governing body has decided that use, sale and distribution of such drugs and alcohol will cause immediate suspension from the school and the information will also be given to the police and municipal authorities.

Computers

It is strictly forbidden to use the computers during breaks unless the teacher has given permission to do so. The use of the computers are to be in connection with teaching and learning. Students are also only allowed to use the computers if the teachers find it necessary to do so. The rules and conduct for the use of the computers are to be found on the blog of The Cosmo: http://blog.thecosmo.dk/.

Clothes

We do not have a school uniform. Students and their parents have a right to decide what kind of clothes the students wear, but at the same time they also have to be aware of the statements and signals different kind of clothes make, and how these are being interpreted by other students, teachers and other members of staff.

We therefore believe that all students regardless of age and gender should be neatly dressed. Girls should dress in such a way that they do not attract too much attention or affront public decency at the school. We therefore encourage the parents and the older students to limit very low-necked blouses and tops as well as t-shirts with provocative images and text to the students’ leisure-time. And the same thing naturally goes for the boys wearing baggy trousers. It is in no way reasonable that other students, teachers and staff at the school should be encumbered with large parts of older students’ underpants.

We reserve the right to ask students to change their clothes, if they are not capable of choosing an ordinary, decent style for school.

Lunch

Students can bring their own packed lunches to school. We also have a cantina, where they can buy lunch. Two or three times a week hot meals are sold and the rest of the days they can buy sandwiches. Students can also order milk every day.

The students in primary school eat lunch at the beginning of 4th lesson, and continue the lesson until 11.50.

Eating during lessons is not allowed. We accept that it might be necessary for the students to have a snack or a drink before and after lunch but this is only allowed during break time.

Classroom Teachers hand out entry forms to buy milk twice a year.

Books

The majority of books needed for the lessons can be borrowed from the school, but because of the augmented prices on books the school has decided that disposable materials to a certain extent should be paid for by the students. The books borrowed from the school are school property, and it is expected that the students will take good care of them.

There are four good things to remember:

1. Write your name on the label
2. Get covers for all your books
3. Do not throw your school bag
4. Do not write or draw in the books – they are not yours!

The book store is run by Kirsten Christensen-Dalsgaard and Vera Christensen.

Forgotten items

If a student forgets or loses his/her clothes, it can be found in the basement. A note concerning the proceed of this will be written on the blog.

Transfer to other schools

The Cambridge curriculum is recognised worldwide, which means that the students of The Cosmo can, without any difficulties whatsoever, move to another school – even if the school uses another curriculum or is a part of another system such as IB (International Baccalaureate) or others – and continue at the student’s present level.

Furthermore, The Cosmo is cooperating with the IB section of Kolding Gymnasium, and Lower Secondary students, who have passed their IGCSE exams, can continue at the IB without taking the first year – the so-called pre-IB.

Transportation

Up to 50 % of transportation expenses are covered for students, whose way to and from school meet the requirements in section 25 subsection 1, number 1 or 2 of the Law concerning Primary and Lower Secondary school for 7- to 16-year-old students [i.e. Folkeskolen, in Danish].

  • Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd classes                             over 2.5 to 12.5 kilometres
  •  4th, 5th, 6th and 7th classes                                               over 6.0 to 16.0 kilometres
  •  3.) 8th, 9th and 10th classes                                                 over 7.0 to 16.0 kilometres

If the student needs to travel longer than the upper kilometre limit, the student will pay the balance.

For the younger students from Kindergarten and 1st and 2nd classes the school offers the service to accompany these students to the beginning of the pedestrian street, from where it is safe for the students to walk to the bus station at Klostergården.
