Daily matters

Homework

It is to be expected that students at The Cosmo have homework every day, with some exceptions though. These exceptions are not scheduled at the beginning of the school year, but will occur according to what the teachers have decided.

Large written assignments are to be expected during the school year.

School hours

The timetables for each class are issued at the beginning of the school year in August. Daily times may vary from those given below. In general:

School starts at 8.05

CIPP-students finish around 13.30

CLSP- & IGCSE-students finish at 15.15

Holiday camps and outings

The Cosmo administrators are working on the schedule for holiday camps and outings for the school year 2009/2010. The schedule will be submitted here as soon as soon as it is finished.

Communication

Message book

All students need a message book. When the message book is full, or if it be lost, a new one can be bought at the school. The school kindly requests that any messages and enquiries concerning exemptions and the like are written in the message book to avoid many small slips of paper lying about.

It is the responsibility of the parents to secure that any messages from the school are signed and returned to the school in order to meet the deadline.

The academic year 2008-2009 runs from 1st of September to the beginning of July, with week-long breaks in October, February, and April, as well as a two-week break from late December into January.

The academic year 2009-2010 runs from late August to end of June, with week-long breaks in October, February, and April, as well as a two-week break from late December into January. The calendar is not yet ready.

Mobile telephones

At a staff meeting it was decided that mobile phones do not belong at the school and in the lower forms, which is from Prekindergarten to Lower Secondary. Mobile phones are destructive for the children’s play and their being together, and they are very disruptive during the lessons. We do however ac-knowledge the need students and parents have in order to contact each other after school hours. Therefore it was also decided that students in need of their mobile phones can hand it in at the office in the morning and collect it after school hours. If parents need to contact their child/children during the day, they may telephone the office, and the student will be given the message as soon as possible.

The students in Lower Secondary are allowed to use their mobile phones during the breaks, but they are not allowed during the lessons. As it is almost impossible to buy a mobile phone without a camera it is now allowed to use these mobile phones on condition that the camera is not used, as it is illegal to take photos of persons and pass these on. In connection with the exams it is strictly prohibited to bring a mobile phone, and a violation of this rule will cause exclusion from the exam in question.

Computers

It is strictly forbidden to use the computers during breaks unless the teacher has given permission to do so. The uses of the computers are to be in connec-tion with teaching and learning. Students are also only allowed to use the com-puters if the teachers find it necessary to do so. The rules and conduct for computer rules are to be found on www.thecosmo.dk at the blog of The Cosmo. So are the web ethics.

The After School Recreation Centre

The Cosmo also has an After School Recreation Centre for children between 5-6 and 11 years. There are accommodations for 30 children only.

The students attending The After School Recreation Centre have an opportunity to spend more time with both Danish children from Kolding Realskole but also children from their own class at The Cosmo. The interaction with friends after school provides the student with a possibility of learning and understanding more about different cultural backgrounds, practise their Danish language and establish closer relationships across the borders.

We have students at The Cosmo that attend the centre all weekdays and also a student who only attends fewer days during the week.

Consultations

During the school years parents are invited to two parents teachers interviews which focus on the student's academic and social skills and development.

Apart from this the Home Room Teachers have two conversations alone with each student during the school year. This is to ensure that the student has the possibility of talking about things which might be a problem for him/her and to maintain the close social contact between the individual student and the Home Room Teachers. These conversations are held in autumn and in spring. They will be held within school hours.

Exemptions

The head teacher is allowed to approve exemptions of single hours after written referral from the parents. Exemptions lasting a whole day or longer must be approved by the head after written referral in the student’s message book. The school recommends the parents only to exempt their children when there are weighty reasons for it. Exemptions from PE or from showering after PE are only given for shorter periods by the PE teacher or by the head. Exemptions lasting longer than four weeks require a medical certificate. The school nurse distributes the forms for that purpose. The medical certificate is paid by the parents according to the teaching guidelines of the 20th of November 1985.

Use of facilities

As we are a department of Kolding Realskole, we use some of the facilities in the main buildings including:

  • Science laboratories
  • Gymnasium
  • Music rooms
  • Computer lab
  • Library
  • Art rooms

Activities and Lessons

Students in The Cosmo join with students in Danish classes for some events such as Sports Day, School parties, Spring Concert and Fancy-dress party at Shrovetide and so on. These activities are compulsory as they are traditional Danish activities.

Most students at The Cosmo have English as a second language. As a result, teachers are experienced in providing learning activities to meet a wide range of abilities in each class.

Students with Special Learning Needs

The Cosmo is open to all students; however we need to be fully aware in advance of any special learning needs and you are obligated to disclose any past diagnoses or additional learning support that has been given.

Depending on the special learning needs of your child, it may not be possible for us to provide for your child as well as he/she may be provided for more adequately elsewhere.

The Cosmo and Kolding Realskole have a No-Bullying Policy.
